North Riding Petty Sessions - At the Richmond Town-hall on Saturday, before Sir George Denys, Bart., Mr. C. Cradock, and the Revs. C.B. and H. W. Yoeman, Sarah Kearton, a young girl of very respectable appearance, and daughter of Mr. James Kearton, landlord of the Miner's Arms Inn, Muker in Swaledale, was charged on suspicion with stealing a cash-box containing £20. According to the statement of Superintendant Gregory, it appeared that the girl had been living with Isabella Reynoldson, at the King's Head Hotel, Gunnerside. Mrs. Reynoldson had given up the inn to a brother named George Reynoldson, and gone to reside a short distance off. The girl still resided with her, and on Wednesday evening she went on a visit to the inn. She stayed a short time, and on coming out of the inn she was observed to have something under her apron. Immediately after she had left the house the landlord missed the cash-box, containing the amount already stated. The cash-box wa subsequently discovered beneath some night soil in the privy on Mrs. Reynoldson's premises. Suspicion fell upon the defendant, who was apprehended by P.C. Williamson, and conveyed to the North Riding Goal at Richmond. At the request of Supt. Gregory the case was adjourned until 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday; bail in £50 being accepted.
