House near Lane End

Postby Fatsheep » Thu Jan 15, 2009 7:12 pm

Hi,
Walking from Blades to Smarber I pass Lane End and a field or two along the next house (two chimneys, small walled off area, 50 feet from the track) is un named. Richmondshire planning map appears to call it or the land next to it, "Stainings".
Any of you guys know the house name, who owns it/lives in it or any history.
Just being curious really as it will bug me till I find out.

Cheers

Should have an answer for you soon as I've posted the link to G E Brown, he knows the name of all the properties around there.

Hi,
Thanks for trying.
The map is simular but I use the one at Richmondshire planning public access site. Try http://publicaccess.richmondshire.gov.u ... lview.aspx

or
http://www.richmondshire.gov.uk/planning
and follow links.
It is good for zooming in and out and has links to planning applications which can help in tracking things down.

using www.magic.gov.uk the house you are looking at is called Staining, being to the left of Lane End, North of Turnip.

Can confirm that the house is Staining, so in most peoples language it'd be Stone Ing. I guess the man who did the Census or OS map didn't understand Swa'dle talk too well when when he went round to visit. John Brown sometime bus driver who lives in Reeth originated from there. John was always a good source for Swaledale farming songs when we were young, there's a fairly good one to the tune of McNamara's Band but I can only remember 1/2 the words.

PERCE,
Sorry, I haven't checked in for a while so I missed your reply. Thanks very much for the info.

Do we know if the house is used today?
