Postby wifey » Wed Jun 11, 2008 1:01 pm

I would love to find any descendants of the Hunter families of Wensleydale/Swaledale . If you can find in your family tree George Hunter born 1826 in Grinton and Jane Hunter born 1824 in Aysgarth who were the parents of Robert Hunter born 1852 Melbecks who moved to Bishop Auckland some time around 1888 please feel free to contact me.
I have George's parents in our tree they were John Hunter born 1801 Grinton and his wife Sarah born in 1796. George's wife Jane was a hunter by birth her father was anthony born 1792 in Askrigg and her mum was Jane born in 1796 Askrigg.

Hi Malcolm I did find a John Hunter born about 1814 Gunnerside in the 1881 England census living in Shildon. He was a retired coal miner with a wife Ann born about 1811 in Weardale living at 3 Kellow Row with daughter in law Hannah Johnson age 32 and grand daughter Eliza A Johnson age 1. Are these your relatives? I can't fit them in to my tree at the moment but I do feel there's a connection there it's just taking a while to see where they fit in.

The Hunter Family

Postby hunterm » Sun Jul 13, 2008 10:55 am

Hi Wifey and Ste adair.
This is some of the information I have gather in the last few days.
John Hunter Born 1763 married Elizabeth Hunter and it looks like they had 10 Children. Sarah Born 1796. John Born 1801(Hosier) John 1821 Francis 1826(Miner) George 1826 James 1826 Thomas 1828 John 1829 and Dinah 1830.

I also found Thomas Hunter DOB 1800 was a Coal Miner and Married Sarah DOB 1774 and had 3 children Betty Hunter DOB 1827 Thomas DOB 1829 Isabella Born 1831.

Then their was James Hunter who married ? and had 4 children
Jane Born 1781 in Kippax Yorks but died in 1807. Anne Born July 1783 in Kippax. then Hannah 20th July 1783 in Kippax and Elizabeth DOB 15 April 1785 in Kippax

Hart Lake. John Hunter DOB 1816 was a coal miner but it was recorded that at the age of 65 was a Farmer with 15 acres of land dwelling in Thorns? married Peggy Hunter DOB 1816 from Muker Rampsholme York had two children Sarah Hunter DOB 1839 and Elizabeth DOB 1840.

and lastly inTwaite Jonathan Hunter DOB 1784 or 1786 not sure was a carpenter and here is the confusing part had two children Jane DOB 1781 and died 1807 the father being the same as James Hunter above. and Jonathan hunter DOB 1816( Is this the Jonathan who was living with his Daughter in York when he retired as a Mining engineer. in 1881.?

From a very hot spain

hi malcolm----- info your s think your johnathon was born 1810 in grinton father john.--mother either barbara blenkiron or mary alton( barbara marriage5 sept 1809 mary 1807) there was also two other children born to a john hunter a ann 1811 and ralph 1808.either john married twice or there are two john hunters THEN JOHN AND MARY HAVE JOHN 1813 AND ALICE 1816 WESLEYAN(GUNNERSIDE) CENSUS1841---johnathon in beeston, leeds anne(born bradford 1813 ish) wife ,2 children john1838,joseph1840 CENSUS1851---west auckland 2 more children mary ann 1844( mary alton ,maybe named after his mum ) and william h 1850 (these dates completely different to your dates for children????) CENSUS 1861----in west auckland john has left, mary is a dress maker .CENSUS 1871------johnathon a colliery manager with anne in wales (THERE IS ALSO A JOHN HUNTER AT BOTTOM OF CENSUS PAGE BORN GUNNERSIDE AGED 57 ,IS BROTHER) CENSUS1881---he is with is daughter mary ann beamwell.hope this helps.. reason johnathon showing up as born in gunnerside is that there was only a few main churches to register marriages ,births etc and grinton is one of the main ones around the area, so he was probably born near gunnerside
