Miners and Farmers - The Agricultural Holdings of the Lead Miners at Heights, Gunnerside, in North Yorkshire by T.B. Bagenal D.Sc., Ph.D.

Northern Mine Research Society, May 1999, 54 pages, A5, £4.50p, ISBN 0 901450 50 2

In this useful and interesting book, Timothy Bagenal looks at the agricultural holdings of a group of lead miners living at Heights, near Gunnerside, in the middle of the 19th century.

Six houses, Jos' House, Lane Head, Lane Foot, Shaw House, Loaning House and John Dunn's, are examined in detail and Dr Bagenal has included plans and photographs of each property. Using the Tithe Apportionment (1843), Manor Court Books, Land Tax Assessments, census records and wills, the occupants of each property are listed along with each building's history and architectural features.

Families mentioned include Alderson, Alton, Batty, Bell, Birkbeck, Bradbury, Brunskill, Buxton, Canterall, Caygill, Coates, Cottingham, Curry, Dunn, Guy, Harker, Miller, Peacock, Pedley, Sunter, Thwaites, Tiplady, Waggit, Walters, Watters, Wharton, White, Woodward and Young. If you are researching any ancestors who lived at Heights it would be worth obtaining a copy of this book - Dr Bagenal may have already done the hard work for you.

And, finally, if you're not quite sure about terms such as boskin, boose, rudster or mewstead a useful two-page glossary is included.
