Milners in Gunnerside

I am researching the Milner family, who lived in Gunnerside up until about the 1820s. Edward Milner was baptised at the Weslyan chapel in 1816. (son of Thomas), but I have no other confirmed information about his siblings or parents/grandparents.
The family were lead miners in Gunnerside, but moved across the pennines to Blackrod in lancashire where they mined coal. I have fairly detailed records of their time in Blackrod, but would appreciate any information that may help track down the family further in Gunnerside. Having been to the Northallerton record office, I find that the records for that time from the Weslyan chapel are in London at the PRO, and I have yet to manage to get there to do further research.

Thanks! I will get around to going to the PRO, but in the meantime, any information you can give me on the brothers and sisters of Edward Milner (c29.4.1816, son of Thomas) Also Thomas' marriage - probably to Mary, sometime before 1816, I presume! I think Mary died aged 72 in 1861 in Blackrod, Lancs.

Bit late I'm afraid. No other Milners listed in the Gunnerside Chapel Registers children of Thomas & Mary - just your Edward.

Interestingly there are children of a Thomas & Mary Millar as early as 1805 - Ruth 23rd November.

In 1908 Thomas & ? Molley Millar 25th February a daughter - ? Nanny.

May be a red herring but I mention this because an Anthony and Dinah Milner seem to have changed from Millar in the early entries to Milner by 1818.

Thanks for that. Sorry i've been slow replying - I've been moving house! i will do some further research when i have time, and will let you know if i get anything interesting. it seems strange that the trail seems to go dead. The Millar name sounds as though it could be interesting though. We are getting back to the time when spelling was not standardized, so different spelling, depending on pronouniation, is possible.

Milner was frequently mis-spelled Miller or Millar on the Victorian Census returns although BD&M records tended to be more accurate.

For centuries the Milners were one of the biggest clans of Upper Swaledale. Milners lived at Calvert's Houses in Henry VIII's time, they had Oxnop Hall and there were links with Crackpot Hall.

In 1861 there were nearly 30 plus their in-laws in Keld alone. By 1871 they had all gone, and we think we now know why. An elderly aunt who died in 1860 had made a disgraceful but very profitable marriage into the nobility.

My 7xgt gfather was James Milner born c.1680 in the parish of Muker. His descendents were James (1708), Edmund (1732), James (1754), James or 'Jammy' (1782), James (1822), James (1844), James (1873). They then moved to Weardale.

'Jammy Milner's Levels' are lead mines near Swinner Gill opened up during the Napoleonic wars.

The Milners were related to the Harker, Alton, Guy, Alderson, Caygill, Hutchinson, Metcalfe, Fawcett, Kearton, Cherry and Peacock families.

thanks for all that - though I think 'my' Milners were long gone before the 'profitable' marriage, as Edward, born 1816 was married in Bolton in 1837 - mining coal in Blackrod instead of lead in Swaledale. (I think the whole family migrated over the pennines)Do you know of any of Jammy Milner's siblings - was there a Thomas perhaps?

Calverts House near Muker was occupied by the Milners - this was around 1680 and before.
