Milner gravestone

Postby anne m » Fri Jan 26, 2007 8:34 am

Does anyone know anything about the Elizabeth, wife of David Milner who's gravestone is in Muker churchyard? The stone isn't listed in your photo gallery, and is very hard to read, but my sister in law has taken a number of photos of it. Elizabeth appears to have died in Feb 1793 aged 20.

MILNER GRAVE

Postby joan myers » Wed Nov 07, 2007 9:42 am

Hello Anne,
I think I am connected to the Elizabeth [Betty] MILNER b. 1773, 'wife of David MILNER' whose name is on the gravestone you saw in Muker Cemetery.
David MILNER, b. 9 Sept. 1773 m. Elizabeth METCALFE in 1791. She died in 1793.
David was the son of Edward MILNER, b. 1744 and Elizabeth ALDERSON, b. 1750 in Muker.
Edward was the son of Anthony MILNER b. 1717 Muker.
Anthony's father was Anthony MILNER, b. 1665 Muker.
The parents of Anthony, 1665 were Edward MILNER 1621 and Elizabeth Metcalfe, 1625.
Both were born in Muker. I believe they are also my direct ancestors.
I would like to hear from anyone connected to any of the above.

Thanks for the information Joan. Sorry to be slow to reply, I haven't visited the site for a while! I'm trying to trace the parents and family of Thomas Milner, who I believe to be the father of Edward Milner born 1816 in Gunnerside. Could you give me any names of David and Elizabeth's children? There can't have been many as she died two years after they were married. Happy New Year! Anne

MILNER GRAVE

Postby joan myers » Sat Jan 05, 2008 10:58 am

Anne,
I was really delighted to get your reply last night Anne.
I haven't found any offspring for David and Elizabeth MILNER as yet but David may well have remarried after the very early death of his wife at age 20 [only a bit over a year from their marriage date].
I found your Edward MILNER born 1816 in Gunnerside and various Census entries for him and his family.
I also found an Thomas MILNER born 8 June 1791 in Gunnerside and an Edward MILNER born 1759 in Gunnerside, a possible father of Thomas.
Happy New Year from Australia,
Joan Myers [nee Milner]

Thanks for that Joan. I knew about Thomas 1791, but have no way of proving that he is Edward's father (a marriage in 1815 to Mary Alton makes it probable though!). I'd missed Edward (1759) birth.

Do you know if David perhaps had any brothers?I don't think though from the dates that either Edward (1759) or Thomas can be his siblings or Edward's as the dates don't really fit.
As for 'my' Edward (1816) and his family - they moved to Blackrod in Lancashire and started mining coal instead of lead. We've only recently found the Gunnerside connection

Thanks again Joan. It is possible that David's brother, Thomas (1786) is the one I'm looking for, as he would have been 30 when Edward was born in 1816. Do you know anything more about him?

Anne,
Yes, Thomas Milner [1786] the brother of David Milner [1773] may be the connection.
I know very little about him except that he was born in Muker and he may be the Thomas who married Mary Alton in Muker on 30 May, 1815.
Mary was born in Gunnerside/Grinton on 22 Sept. 1789.
Mary is almost certainly the Mary Milner [Widow] b. 1789 and living in Blackrod, Lancs. in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses.

Once again Joan, it has been ages since I checked this forum - I've been very busy with other things! I'm pretty sure that the Mary (widow) in Blackrod is the mother of Edward, (b 1816), in which case, if you believe her to be the wife of Thomas brother to David, we do indeed have a match, and common ancestry for my husband! I will try to find time to fish out all the paperwork and cross reference it all. I seem to have a record of Thomas (1786) dying in 1789, so perhaps Thomas b 1791 could have been the next brother? otherwise it all collapses again!

Maybe it won't take so long for me to reply another time.

MILNER Gravestone

Postby joan myers » Sun Aug 03, 2008 4:58 am

Hello Anne,
According to IGI a Thomas MILNER b. 1786, Muker married a Mary ALTON b.
1789, Gunnerside in 1815 in MUKER.
I believe this Thomas was my 3rd. Cousin 5 times rem. His parents were Edward MILNER and Elizabeth ALDERSON, m. 1770, Muker.
I did find another Thomas b. 1791. His parents were also Edward and Elizabeth but with different birth dates. I couldn't find any further details about him unfortunately.

Thanks Joan. I've got out my notes and: according to the Muker parish registers - Thomas born 2 April 1786 (christened 7 May 1786) was the son of Edward and Elizabeth, farmer of Gunnerside. On 26 Jan 1789 Thomas son of Edward, farmer, was buried aged 3 years. (Lodge Green Muker) I assumed that this was the same Thomas. There was then a Thomas born 8 June 1791, son of Edward of Gunnerside in the Grinton parish register. This could have been the same family, but why would they have suddenly gone to Grinton rather than Muker?? The trouble with the IGI is that it is full of flaws, and the trouble with parish registers is that they don't give you enough information! I agree that Thomas of Grinton married Mary Alton on 30 May 1815 according to Muker records. Witnesses were Thomas Whitfield and Thomas Raw, clerk. I'm pretty certain that they are the parents of Edward of Gunnerside and the family who eventually went to Blackrod. Sorry if I've messed up your tree - but you may have a better explanation. Anne

Thomas Milner

Anne,
If Thomas MILNER born 1786, [Father Edward, Mother Elizabeth] died in 1789 then Thomas Milner born Grinton 1791,[ Father Edward] must be your man. Don't worry about my tree. You haven't messed it up!

Joan

Dear Joan, apologies once again for not replying sooner. Just to get this clear then: (!)
Thomas (born 1791) married Mary Alton (born 1789) in 1815.
His father was Edward.
It is possible, but unlikely that this Edward is the Edward that married Elizabeth Alderson in 1750, (father to Isobel, David, Anthony, Edward, James, Betty, Thomas (1786-9), John and Ralph.)
Only if they went to Grinton, for some reason, instead of Muker to register the birth of a second Thomas in 1891, would there be any connection.
I wonder if we can find that out?!!!
How do you fit in by the way?
My husband is directly descended from Edward (b 1816) in Gunnerside... He married Alice Crawson in Bolton in 1837, his daughter Elizabeth was born 1838, her son David born 1861, his son (and John's grandfather) Horace born 1890 in Blackrod.
Another thought. It looks as though Thomas (1786 might be a twin of John, (b about 1786). There are occasional twins in John's family.....
All the best
Anne

Anne,

Thank you for your reply. Would you mind sending me your email address so that I can send you my MILNER Tree. I have traced my MILNERS back to :-

Edward MILNER, b. 1621, Muker who married Elizabeth METCALFE, b. 1625. The marriage date was 30 March, 1646 in Muker.

The tree is too long to put on the Gunnerside Site, and may still have some inaccuracies so I would prefer to send it to you privately.

I believe your husband could have also descended from the Edward and Elizabeth above.

My email address is :- jlmyers@iinet.net.au

Regards,
Joan
