The Band of Hope, a temperance organisation, was formed in 1847 to teach and impress upon children the importance and principles of sobriety and teetotalism. Members were enrolled from the age of six and met weekly to listen to lectures and participate in activities. Music played an important role and competitions were held between different Band of Hope choirs.
This old glass negative shows the Gunnerside members, dressed in their best clothes, standing in front of their banner and is believed to have been taken about 1909. Any identification of individuals would be welcome.
