The October issue of Country Kitchen magazine features a short article mentioning the Kings Head in Gunnerside. When contributors Clarissa and David Porter stayed in the village 25 years ago they were quite underwhelmed by their visits to the pub. Things have changed considerably since then and landlord Mike Watson now offers a fine service to regulars and visitors.

The Swaledale Cheese Company of Richmond and Swaledale Woollens at Muker also get a mention in the article, and Clarissa has supplied recipes for Swaledale cheese pudding with crispy bacon, parkin, and apple Yorkshire pudding.

(The photo of the Kings Head on the magazine's cover was taken by Gunnerside.info photographer Lesley Close)

I'm underwhelmed by their lack of observation skills, to the best of my knowledge the bar still has the same carpet from 25 years ago.

Paddy and Paula are now in charge at the Kings Head. Paddy is an excellent chef and the pub is getting a growing reputation for its food, which is of gourmet quality, good value and all freshly cooked.

The pub's phone number is now 01748 886126. Pop in if you're passing through Swaledale and try the menu.
