Muker
('mior-akr - narrow field') lies west of Gunnerside, near the point
where Muker Beck joins the River Swale. Various Neolithic artefacts
have been found in the area, suggesting that it was occupied long
before Norse settlers arrived. The church of St Mary the Virgin, built
during the reign of Elizabeth I and renovated in 1890, is just visible
on the left of the picture. |
