A Nonogenarian Woodman.
For ancient vigour commend us to Gunnerside. There resides Mr James Calvert, who was born in the same year as Mr Gladstone, 1809. He is a great admirer of the famous statesman, and by way of showing that like has felled a tree annually on his birthday for many years. The tree that he struck down on Saturday last had a girth of 21 inches. Before the old gentleman developed a not unnatural stoop considering his years, he stood 6ft. 21/2in. in his stocking feet. Mr Calvert was a witness in a local law suit in London last year, this being his first journey to the Metropolis. In a word, Mr Calvert is a remarkable old man. He is great uncle to Mrs Mary Shaw, of the King's Head Hotel. It is interesting to add that Mr Calvert, Mrs Shaw, and others are portrayed with a fine artistic pen in Miss Beatrice Harridan's latest novel, "The Fowler." Miss Harridan stayed at the King's Head, and is remembered by many of people thereabouts. |
