A Hale Nonogenarian.
On Friday last Mr Jas. Calvert, of Gunnerside, entered upon his 90th year. He has always been an ardent Liberal in politics, and some years ago began to follow the example of Mr Gladstone by felling a tree on his birthday. This feat he accomplished on Friday last, being hale and hearty for his years. What makes the event more remarkable is that he has felled the last of a lot. But the veteran woodcutter had numerous offers from his admiring neighbours that if spared to another year to again undertake the duty trees would not be wanting by which to test his strength and accomplish the task. |
