SAVAGE ASSAULT NEAR RICHMOND. — At the Richmond County Police Court, on Saturday, before Mr H. W. Yeoman, Mr George Gilpin-Brown, Sir George W. Dennis, Bart., and the Rev. H. W. Yeoman, a miner, named John Tiplady, was fined 5l., including costs, for a savage and unprovoked assault on a fellow miner, named Wm. Bell, on New Year's Day. The men reside near Reeth, in Swaledale, and on the day named they were at a public-house at Gunnerside when some words arose between them in reference to a previous quarrel. The complainant, who was a accused of being a lying fellow, denied it, and the defendant then struck him a severe blow on the eye, bursting the pupil, and causing the complainant to lose his sight.—The medical man (Mr A. B. Kernott), in reply to the Bench, gave it as his opinion that the eye had been burst either with a weapon, which the defendant must have had in his hand, or by the defendant's thumb nail. |
